While many of us recognise the need to care for our cars properly, few of us pay much attention to windshield care. But in fact, the windshield is one of the most important components of you vehicle - particularly when it comes to safety. It’s key to the structural integrity of your car and will take much of the impact in the event of a roll-over.
It’s also important with regard to airbag deployment; when front airbags go off, they will initially rise up against the windshield before expanding outwards to cushion the front passengers. It’s therefore critical that your windshield is sound.
Here are 3 tips to help you take care of your windshield and make sure it’s in tip-top shape at all times:
1. Avoid sudden changes in temperature.
Exposing your windshield to a sudden change in temperature can make it expand or contract and thereby cause a crack (or worse). For example, don’t (tempting though it may be) suddenly put your air conditioning on full blast after your car’s been baking under strong sunlight.
Likewise, NEVER pour warm water on a frozen windshield to melt the ice. A lot of people do this during winter time - big mistake. Use a defrosting spray or a scraper instead.
2. Have damage seen to ASAP.
Chips, holes and star-breaks can turn into full-blown cracks. The slamming of doors plus the normal shakes and vibration of driving can cause minor defects to expand. If you get this kind of minor damage, it may not seem like much, but you should get it attended to ASAP. Small damage is quicker, cheaper and easier to repair than a new windshield!
And don’t be tempted to carry out minor repairs yourself unless you know what you’re doing; a botched repair will only create more trouble to put right. As a temporary measure, you can place some clear adhesive tape over the damage. It won’t prevent a crack from spreading, but it will keep out dirt, water and other contaminants.
3. Keep it clean.
At least once a week, or whenever your windshield gets dirty, give it a good clean (inside as well as out). If you use a store bought cleaner, make sure it’s ammonia-free; not only is ammonia unpleasant to breathe in, but it can also destroy your windshield’s tint. If you want to go the home-made route, make your own cleaning solution by mixing equal parts vinegar and water.
Whatever type of cleaning solution you use, wipe with a cotton or micro-fiber cloth; this type of cloth is highly absorbent and won’t leave unsightly streaks.
It’s a good idea, too, to use a product like Rain X on your windshield. It seals the microscopic pores on the glass and creates a barrier that repels dust, dirt, salt, bugs and other debris.
